Polishing Mosin Nagant bolt & trigger parts?
I'm trying to improve the bolt movement on a Mosin Nagant 91/30 I recently bought.
When working the bolt to cock the rifle it is extremely hard to push the bolt up. I have diasassembled the bolt and it is clean and has a light coating of grease. I read on a Mosin website about clipping the bolt spring and I cut about 1/4 inch off the spring. It is still a good 1/4 inch longer than they recommended. This helps but I would also like to polish the mating surfaces on the bolt and maybe on the trigger parts. What can I use to polish these parts that is readily available? I was thinking valve grinding compound. Any suggestions? |

Simichrome or Flitz metal polish and a soft wheel on a dremel tool

Buffing wheel bench grinder jeweller's rouge.
Surely you already have this for sweetening the edges of you sharps! |

Hey, I already have a tube of Flitz and a dremel.
I'll try that. |

Quite likely you have the dreaded Mosin Nagant sticky bolt syndrome, a common problem.

It is hard to work the bolt with no ammo. However once the bolt is cocked than it is much easier. So I assume it is the actual cocking of the bolt that is being hindered. |

Flitz is great for POLISHING a surface. If you need to SMOOTH the surface, you must use India Stones. Here's two different listings in Brownells, the professional gunsmiths company...

Re: Polishing Mosin Nagant bolt & trigger parts?
Yes, but do NOT break any 'contact surfaces'.
IE, don't smooth over surfaces that are used to 'hold' things in place. Say, LIKE A SEAR OR A TRIGGER. Not that is NOT to say you should not clean up the sides of these pieces. But do NOT touch the contact surfaces of these areas. Unless you KNOW what you are doing and have done it many times. You can ruin a contact surface in the blink of an eye. And then you have to go out and buy another one to replace the one you just ruined. Ask me WHY I know that. Hope that helps. |
Re: Polishing Mosin Nagant bolt & trigger parts?
After you polish the mating camming surfaces on the cocking piece & bolt body, don't forget to use a decent GREASE (not oil) for best lubing of those surfaces.
If you shorten the firing pin spring too much, you might get light firing pin hits & misfires. |
